Summary of the book and my opinion
This book was about a young girl named Alice Ann Moxley who's family moved to Mississippi from Chicago. This book took place in 1964 and her father, an FBI agent, was sent to Jackson, Mississippi to protect black people who are registered to vote. It all changed when Valerie Taylor, the daughter of Reverend Taylor, joined Alice's sixth grade class in Parnell Middle School. Alice was forced to choose between the popular crowd or Valerie. She tried to make friends with the popular cheerleaders but thought it is much easier to befriend Valerie. However, her plan backfired when Valerie refused to be friends but still continued to suffer harassments from other classmates. Alice soon realized the only way to befriend the cheerleader was to act like she had no interest in Valerie. They came up with ways to harm Valerie so she would leave the school. Valerie ignored those harassments as if they were nothing. Alice only realized she shouldn't be with the popular crowd when a tragedy struck.
I thought this book was a great lesson for me. It showed me how wrong we were to judge others. Segregation was and is wrong. No one should be segregated against their race. I loved this book because there was lots of action and every moment was exciting.
